Warts are benign tumors caused by a virus in the outer skin layer. They are not cancerous and mildly contagious from person to person, and from one area to another on the same person. They appear anywhere on skin, but most likely on fingers, hands and arms. They are most common in children and young adults between ages one and thirty, but may occur at any age.
The cause is invasion of the outer skin layer by the papilloma virus. The virus stimulates some cells to grow more rapidly than normal. By adulthood, ninety percent of all people have antibodies to the virus, indicating a history of at least one wart infection. To keep from spreading warts, dont scratch them. Warts spread readily to small cuts and scratches. Wear properly fitting shoes.
Genital warts are tiny flat bumps, or bumps that look like cauliflowers on the skin. They appear on the sexual organs of men and women and can also appear on the buttocks. In some people, the wart virus can be present in the skin even though warts cannot be seen. You can get them by having sex with someone who has warts, whether they are visible or not.
If you have genital warts, you may find out wart-like bumps on your sexual organ. These need to be checked by a doctor or nurse. It may take from four weeks to three months, or longer, for the warts to appear after you have been infected, and they may never appear. You could have genital warts and not see them.
If you have different sexual partners, or if your partner has different partners, you should also be tested for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, genital herpes, and HIV. You may need a test for syphilis and shots to prevent hepatitis B. Please remember! The more sexual partners you have, the higher your risk of getting an sexually transmitted infection.
You can reduce the risk of spreading genital warts by using a condom. Continue using them until no new warts appear for at least two months. The wart virus may still be present in your skin even after the warts have disappeared. Genital warts need to be treated with medication applied by a doctor or a nurse. Treatment often involves more than one visit. The persons you have sex with also need to be examined.
If your sexual partner has had warts, you should have an exam. Once the warts have been treated, have an exam or examine yourself every three months for a year. It is important to take care of warts when you find them because some strains of the virus that causes them can lead to precancerous cell changes of the cervix. All women exposed to genital warts must have a pap smear once a year.
Cryotherapy is an office procedure that doesnt require anesthesia or cause bleeding. Freezing stings or hurts slightly during application, and pain may increase a bit after thawing. Two to five weekly treatments are sometimes necessary to destroy the wart. Electrosurgery can usually be completed in one office visit, but healing takes longer, and secondary bacterial infections and scarring are more common. If you have electrosurgery, keep the treatment site clean with soap and water.
If you have cryotherapy, a blister sometimes with blood will develop at the treatment site. The roof of the blister will come off without further treatment in ten to fourteen days. You should have little or no scarring. Wash and use make-up or cosmetics as usual. If clothing irritates the blister, cover with a small adhesive bandage. If the blister breaks, the fluid may have active virus and spread to other areas; wash with hot water and soap, dry and cover the area.
