N. Goodman and B. Stroud Sharing their Views on the Phenomenon of Induction

By: Andrew Schwartz

The New Riddle of Induction made Nelson Coodman well-known. This work contains his views connected with such phenomenon as induction. He claims that not all habits are established by regularities, although the human habits and regularities are the source of inductive reasoning. Justifying induction can not be a dominant figure while defining valid induction, according to his theory. Barry Stroud is another famous philosopher. He is the author of the work named The Significance of philosophical Skepticism. Stroud while defining the induction leaned upon the so-called prism of skeptical challenge.

The views of Nelson Goodman and Barry Stroud may seem at first to be in conflict, but in actual fact both theories are focused on one and the same issue, namely: defining the concept of a valid induction and answering or at least trying to answer the question: if a man really knows what he thinks he knows? Both philosophers study the relevance of knowledge justification and its specification in the view of validity.

In such a way both Goodman and Stroud have their aim consisting in defining difference between such phenomena as valid and invalid inductions. When talking about concrete principles of inference it should be underlined that inductive reasoning has none of them. As for the deductive reasoning such principles exist in it, the same concerns the laws of logic.

There are certain rules of induction to which any induction must correspond in order to be accepted as valid. However, the accepted inductive practice has certain codification through which the rules of induction are to be justified just like the induction. The deductive logic just as the inductive logic is connected with a relation between so-called comparable statements. There are accidental and law-like inductions which should be distinguished in case of defining the validity of induction or the validity of knowledge.
