My Last Confession By Helen Fitzgerald

Based in Glassgow, Helen FitzGerald is an Australian author who has written a dark thriller with a dark noir-ish edge, it is also called chick-lit, but you need to make your own decision. Believe it to be chick-lit at your own risk since there is violence, drugs, incest and male rape all around and My Last Confession by Helen FitzGerald is definitely not a comforting read. At the same time, it keeps you interested throughout and you keep turning the pages to find out what happened next.

Creating a New Life

Krissie is the narrator of the story, who is a single mum living with her boyfriend. She feels determined to create a new life with her boyfriend and her son, and she gets herself a job of the parole officer. Everything starts well when she exposes a clients plan to live with the same children he was convicted of abusing sexually. Its the second case which creates the trouble (and the book). A man is accused of murder of his mother-in-law, and Krissie cannot believe it. She does some private investigation due to which her own and her loved ones are endangered.

Realistic Contradictions

The readers may want to finish the book in two or three sittings. Krissie has her own quirks (though some of them are negative), the contradictions of her character make it even more realistic. The sense of humor that she displays is of self deprecating type and is very wicked. The book My Last Confession by Helen FitzGerald has a free flowing narrative though it goes into third person at times. The characterization is superb and the authors ability to shock the readers is unmatched as you read about the wedding dress of Krissie in one page and the next page describes the details of a woman being butchered.

Fast Moving and Light Hearted

The end of the novel ties the story well and cleanly. The book My last confession by Helen FitzGerald is fast moving and light hearted (not sure) though the book is a witty comment on the current work culture that is followed throughout the world, where nobody understands what is their responsibility yet do their job well (should we say they achieve their performance targets well?).

Nave and Warm Hearted

There are things about the plot that may make you somewhat uncomfortable. You may feel concerned about her home life and the way she handles her boyfriend and son though she is presented as nave and warm hearted woman who is not quite why things are not going right in her personal life.
