I am in the midst of setting up my sewing studio to be more efficient. I liked the last setup because it left a lot of space to move around in. However, it was kind of cold and not very efficient at all. And, I decided that with a bit of imagination, I could fit my long-arm quilter in there as well, instead of in the basement. Very nice!
Most everything is in place, and Ive done a few small projects to make sure it works for me. Looking around at everything, though, Ive noticed that I dont have much of my stash in there! Like the long-arm, most of it is down in the basement. Now, this just doesnt work for me!
When I get in the mood for
making quilts or stitching out a machine embroidery design, I want to do it now, not after a lengthy rummage through boxes in the basement! And, since I am finally embracing embroidery quilting, I want to be able to try out my ideas without worrying whether or not I have the right quilting supplies or embroidery patterns!
My current projects include mending firefighters pants and making curtains for the many sets of French doors in this house. Other than concentrating while making measurements, my mind is free to wander while I stitch. Since organizing my stash has never been one of my favorite things, Ive been daydreaming about holding a huge yard sale, selling everything, and starting over! Wouldnt that be nice!
But, since that would mean organizing it all anyway, I allowed my daydreams to take me to the fantasy realm of owning my own shop! I could stock fabrics and threads; stabilizers and patterns; scissors and rulers. Everything a happy fiber artist could ever need. It would be a fabulous shop!
Affordable fabrics,
patterns for embroidery and sewing, classes on machine embroidery and quilting, and books and magazines galore! I went into downtown Chania yesterday for my cup of cappuccino. The caf wasnt open yet, so I wandered through the quiet Sunday streets, listening to the priests at the local cathedral sing. I found a wonderful empty shop, with a second floor that opened to the ground floor. There was space for a cutting counter, windows for display, and a little nook for a cash register. Oh, I had a wonderful hour of dreaming over my coffee!
Today, its back to reality. But, as I repair seams, sew hems, or press and fold fabric for proper storage, I can let my mind visit this dream shop of mine. I see myself happily chatting with other stitchers, measuring out fabric, and ringing up sales. At 10:00 am, I will take the caf break that is the norm here; maybe meeting up with some of my customers, as my favorite caf is just around the corner! At 6:00 pm I will turn off the lights, lock the door, and walk through town to my car, thinking about a tasty dinner and smiling about living my dream!
