My Journey To Phoenix - The Wonders Of Culture

By: Chris Jensen

My husband did not happen to be in any such job where I stood a chance of stepping out of India and I had stopped thinking of foreign lands, but wonders never cease and here I am sitting in the loving company of my son and daughter in law who have brought me to Phoenix .

The journey, and the new place has given a new meaning to my life and I love to recollect every moment of that time which is preserved as a precious treasure in my memory. I would like to share some of it with you.

There is no dearth of travel writings by many people but to see the new world with my old eyes was indeed a thrill.

The flight from New Delhi to Los Angeles was almost 20 hours with a short stop at Frankfurt for about 25 minutes. My nephew who works for an airline was traveling with me and so I came to know that this my first flight abroad was the longest that could be taken by anyone, it is almost 10,000 miles. The view from the airplane window was enough to keep me engrossed, and to add to that were the sumptuous meals served on the flight. I ate, slept and talked to my nephew and sure enough in all that excitement we were at Frankfurt in no time. Here we were led to a huge room to sit in comfort. Coffee was available but no conversation was possible as the employees there did not know English.

This huge room had many seats, and some passengers settled down on the seats while some started to walk furtively, perhaps to give their body some movement after several hours of being hauled up in their seats. Soon we were back in the plane and ready to take off but due to the rush it took some time for our flight to to take off.

The next phase went slowly as now I was getting eager to get to my destination. I read a little tried to see some movie and programs in the small T.V. provided on the hand rest of my seat and ultimately slept for quite sometime. Around 6:30 in the evening, the U.S. time we all were preparing to get down in Los Angeles, our destination had come and my heart was jumping like a child. We landed on the U.S. soil and I saw my sons pleasant smiling face greeting me. With him I took another short flight, just an hour and reached Phoenix.

This was another huge airport and it looked very bare as there were hardly any people. They really have too big an infra structure for too small a number, and suddenly my eyes fell on Vinita, the pretty smiling face of my daughter in law, who came to the airport alone though it was night time. I felt a surge of emotion overpowering me as I left myself in the loving care of my children and closed my eyes, all anxiety, unspoken yet faded away. My stay in Phoenix forms an extremely important and beautiful part of my life, and to do full justice to that I will need more time and space, so bye for now till we meet again.
