In Spain, music and life cannot be too far behind. Such is the intimate intertwining of music into the lives of people that anywhere you turn in Barcelona, you are most likely to see, hear and experience the zest for life as marked by music in the people. Visitors and locals alike are able to enjoy virtually every genre of music known to man, from the classical and opera, the pop and rock, the rumba and flamenco to the hip hop and techno.

International Influence: Considered as one of the important centers of the Spanish contemporary music scene, Barcelona continues to exert considerable influence on rock, pop, heavy metal and hip hop genres. Its musicians and artists are known throughout Spain, often touring other cities to introduce the unique modern music of the Barcelona people. Of course, the music itself is influenced by international influences from Europe and North America and, hence, resulting in a genre all its own.

When it comes to the classical and opera music scene, the Barcelona influence is even stronger than its modern counterpart. Keep in mind that this is the birthplace of the great famous singers Jose Carrera and Montserrat Caballe, the Renaissance composer Tomas Luis de Victoria, the ballet composer Manuel de Falla and the passionate guitarist Pepe Romero. With such a dazzling array of talents singers and musicians, it is no wonder that Barcelona rocks and we don't mean in the rock scene either!

Gypsy Music: And don't forget that Barcelona is home to a vibrant community of Gypsies who have created their own version of rumba. Appropriately known as rumba catalana, it is similar to flamenco but with different canons, the music of which is a catchy blend of Afro-Cuba and flamenco music. No matter what flamenco purists might say about it, rumba catalana is fun, hip and funky.

Dance Music: For heart-thumping, body-swaying dance music, the dance halls, discos and clubs of Barcelona will never disappoint the intrepid local tagging along many visitors. The lights, sounds and food of these dance music venues are sufficient reasons to give party places in Ibiza a run for their money. This is the city where trance, techno and electronic music live loud alongside pop, rock and metal, after all, and so one can expect such a wide array of choices. Just be sure to dress in appropriate club wear depending on the dress code of the establishment - bouncers are not known for being tolerant of too-radical people.

Live Music: And of course, the live music scene in Barcelona is as much alive in spirit and sound as the canned music. Visitors have access to many of the city's spectacular performing arts festivals and live concerts in all sorts of music genres that it is almost impossible to miss any of them, much less not be attracted to enjoy them.
