Situated on England's south coast the Southampton Solent area is a fascinating place to live with its historic past, the port has been an important feature of Southampton for centuries. The port as it's known today is a far cry from the harbour used by the Romans, with its privileged position made it Britain's premier trading post. Local Legend tells about a Viking King, known as King Canute who in 1016 is said to have commanded the waves to retreat at Southampton without success and got very wet.

Many troops have embarked from Southampton to fight battles around the world,during in the hundred year's war Armies embarked from here to win the Battles of Crecy and Agincourt. The first and second world wars and of course the Falkland's war saw many troops pass though Southampton. Many famous ships have set sail from Southampton, the Pilgrim Fathers bound for America in 1620 set sail in the Mayflower, on 15th April 1912 Titanic sailed on her maiden voyage which ended in tragedy, a memorial can be viewed in East Park Southampton. Other famous sailings include the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and the France. One major feature of the port is the double high tides, the first high tide is followed two to three hours after my the second high tide, a phenomena, which has attracted many large companies to the port and still does today.

The town became walled in the medieval era, and some remnants of these defences remain throughout the city today, these remains even survived the bombing which devastated Southampton during the Second World War and parts of the City Walls that remain and can be walked by following the 'Walk the Walls' signs. Towers from the Fourteenth and Fifteenth century have been restored; a museum of local archaeology is housed in God's House Tower. Several city gates can still be seen, built by the Normans the Bargate, is a fine example, the oldest Church in the city, St. Michael's dates back to Norman times, it contains a rare black marble font imported from Tourni.

Southampton is an ideal place to live with its interesting mix of old and new and links to premier sailing and water sports venues on the Southampton Solent coast, with some of the best marina facilities and home to the renowned Boat show. Southampton's central position makes it an ideal base for exploring the Isle of Wight, New Forest and the Southampton Solent coast.
