Motorcycles In The Desert - A Surprising Marriage

By:

Deserts and motorcycles have become interconnected with one another. And while some spectators may not be able to understand the marriage between tires and sand, for those who readily make it out to the desert in full motorcycle gear the connection couldn't be clearer.

What deserts offer a motorcycle rider is something urban streets cannot: off-road tracks. The ability to treat a dirt hill like a ramp and veer a motorcycle into the air is impossible in urban settings. The closest things to this within the city are indoor venues or strategically planned outdoor ramps. But for many riders, half the fun of completing jumps is continuously being able to ride into them, as opposed to lining up a bike with an artificial ramp and succeeding in only one jump.

Similarly, the desert offers obstacles, turns, and scenery to a ride. It helps to condition riders to think on their feet and improves their reaction times. For this reason, many professional and semi-professional motocross riders choose to hold their practice sessions in the deserts of Southern California as opposed to a state-of-the-art indoor venue. In addition, the desert is free of rules and restraints that have otherwise left many motocross drivers parking their bikes back in the garage after an uneventful day at an overcrowded indoor practice setting.

Putting motocross-style riding aside, for the easy-riders among the group the desert offers miles of expanse of nearly-abandoned road. Experiencing the hot pavement under your motorcycle boots and speeding down an open highway has a liberating feeling to it. In addition, the absence of traffic and the hustle and bustle of the city seem to enhance the beautiful natural landscapes and big skies of the desert, which can ease even the most stressed rider's mind.

If that's not a good enough reason for motorcycles and deserts to be linked to one another, then the weather conditions are. For the most part, low-lying deserts experience only one of two weather conditions: sun or thunderstorms. The majority of thunderstorms are in the winter seasons and sometimes early spring, but by the time summer rolls around the roads are dry and the weather is agreeable. For a biker to be able to ride for miles without the fear of landing in a blizzard, hail-storm, or downpour is a comforting feeling.

So this summer, go and see what all the fuss is about! Head toward the sun and sand and have your own desert adventure.
