Motorcycle For Love Of Living

By:

Since I took up riding motorcycles in my 50's, I am trying to learn all the social mores that go with this delightful hobby. For instance, I learned early on from my instructor that there was a sort of 'secret handshake' between bikers. When you pass another motorcycle on the road, you extend your arm down and out at a low angle.

The oncoming biker will do the same. It is an acknowledgment of a brotherhood of a minority on the highway, that you have chosen to be 2-wheeled rather than 4-wheeled. I learned of the great helmet debate, the "You're stupid if you don't" versus the "Bikes are about freedom" debate. It was taught in the Rider Safety class I took to learn the legal ways to be safe. And have fun.

When I am on the road, I also notice there are fashion rules. Headgear comes in many varieties, colors and styles. His and her matching helmets now come with an option for wireless radios so you can communicate safely while riding. This is a huge improvement over silence when you are having a fight with someone and want to take it on the road. It also improves a woman's ability to back seat drive from behind the driver. Matching jackets to motorcycle color and style can also be very classy.

A couple riding down the road in on their Harley wearing matching women's and Harley Davidson men's leather jackets that are color coordinated with their bike is a spectacular sight. Foot gear can be leather boots or closed-toed shoes, but although some would call sandals fashionable, they are dangerous while riding.

But more than any of these mores and fashions, I have learned that the feel of the wind on your face, and the smell of the earth as you pass it, the temperature changes of bridges and fields and forests - all of these are the reasons you take to the road on a motorcycle. It makes you feel alive in ways that other traveling forms do not. I enjoy flying for the visual thrills.

I enjoy sports cars for the feel of speed. I like a horse to see the countryside and smell the air. I even enjoy riding a bicycle for the physical exercise. But none of of these ways makes me feel as alive as riding down the road on a Harley Davidson motorcycle with my loved one in our leather jackets.
