More Than Half Of U.s. Adults Use Social Networking

The latest report shows that about 65 percent of U.S. adult Internet users use Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and other social networks, higher than the 61 percent of last year.

If not even taking into account of American adults who do not use the Internet, the proportion of the U.S. social network users in all adults in the United States is still more than half. Since 2005, this proportion began to explode. At that time, about 8 percent of U.S. adult Internet users, which is 5% of U.S. adults, use social networking. Even compared with the 29% in 2008, the current ratio has doubled.

The data show that American people between the ages of 18 to 29 are the main users of social network. The social networking users in this age period account for 89% of Internet users. The proportion of daily use of social networking is also up to 69%. According to the comprehensive data of all ages, 69 percent of U.S. women adult Internet users use social networking, higher than the male Internet users' 60%. The data show that, at least from 2008 onwards, the proportion of female social network users is higher than men.

According to the comprehensive gender data, the youngest users are still among the most active social network users. In the group between the ages of 18 to 29 years old, 83% of U.S. Internet users use social networking sites. In the age group above 65 years old, the proportion is just 33%. However, the analyst found that among the United States Internet users in the age group between 50 and 64 years old, the daily users of the social network grows the fastest. The ratio has increased from the 20 percent of last year to 32%.

Overall, about 43 percent of U.S. adult Internet users visit social networks every day. The rates of last year and 2008 were 38% and 13% respectively. The analysts of the industry only the ratios of Internet e-mail and search activity are higher than this proportion. The two ratios were 61% and 59% respectively.

In the survey of 2009, 46 percent of U.S. adult Internet users said they had used social network. Today, the proportion of U.S. adult Internet users who daily visit social networks is close to that figure. The analysts of the industry also found that different ethnic groups, household income, education level and residence of Internet users use have no significant difference in using social networks.
