It may have been successful in fighting tooth decay for 20 years, but this same achievement has brought them another problem as the 1980s approached. However, as general dentistry went down, cosmetic dentistry began making a name for itself. At present, less than 20 percent of the nation's 130,000 dentists do not practice cosmetic dentistry, the fastest flourishing branch of their industry.

From the revenue of $32 billion generated by the dental industry, a book author and faculty of a medical college in Georgia estimates half of this to be coming from the cosmetic department. The president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry says that dentists now do thrice as much cosmetic work as five years prior. Because of the new and more improved materials that they have, the great increase was made possible.

Most apparent among them are the porcelain laminates, thin porcelain veneers that are placed over existing teeth and bonded into position. Chipping can be prevented by also avoiding biting into hard stuff like nails and spareribs. But they are low maintenance, durable and hard to detect, says most dentists. For dentists who do not go below 10 patients for porcelain laminates a month, they can generate up to $250,000 of revenue yearly.

Bleaching is another cosmetic dental treatment that has started to become popular in America today and it is a chemical based treatment that whitens teeth at a cost of 100 to 200 dollars each treatment. A big part of the clients that are having these procedures done are entertainers and politicians. People not in the public eye are also coming around, men, in particular. 40 percent of cosmetic patients is made up of male clients, which is a big leap from just 20 percent a few years ago.

Porcelain has been part of dentists' materials for a long time, but the refining of the technique of bonding it to existing teeth is just recently done. American manufacturers will be closing a sale for more than 300,000 porcelain laminates for $20 million just for this year. Even if porcelain is most favored technique for now, researchers of dentistry are always on the lookout, testing and baking to find the next better bond. One dentist utilizes ceramic particles in a sealing wax to create caps and bridges. The caps are placed inside an oven set for seven minutes, after being molded in the mouth. Expect to come up with caps that are twice as strong as porcelain laminates, yet the price is half price lower.

Avail of the specialty designed oven for $1,000 and you can do the baked bonding in your dental office. Just as one of the dentists is baking, one dentist from New York has devised a patented silk bonding procedure that is three times stronger than the currently circulating bond, according to him. This, however, exceeds the price of regular bonding by 25 percent. An ADA official acceded the claim of increased strength after baking the mixture, but the difference is not that notable.

Cutting out the need for bonding in certain cases is another new process being used. In order to whiten them, they just need a certain amount of hydrogen peroxide. There is yet to be any ill effect reported but occasionally, the discoloration recurs over time. A dilemma shared by most cosmetic dentists is that patients have the difficulty seeing the result of the cosmetic procedures and they return to the dentist's office for uncertain reasons.

A faculty member of a university in Southern California has installed a computer program in his clinic that will give the patients an advance viewing of their expected appearance after the procedure. The system is an interplay of a video camera, an electronic pen and an electronic writing pad, hooked up to a tower with a color motion picture display. Before being fed to the monitor, the image of the patient's smile is captured using the camera. With the electronic pen and pad that he prepared, he can present more visually the expected cosmetic results such as whitening, closing gaps or smoothing edges.

Individuals are often amazed to see their smiles way up close. Then they're amazed to see what a minor change can do in terms of improving their appearance.
