The lumbar spine is located between the thorax spine and the pelvic spine. The attachments are posterior in nature and you can feel the bone at the center of your back functions by spinous processes and the paired transverse functions by articular processes. The transverse processes functions principally for attaching the muscles and the articular processes is meant for posterior joints connecting the vertebra to the immediate adjacent vertebrae. The major function of the lumbar spine is to protect the spinal nerves. All the five lumber vertebrae maintain equal distance and transfer the weight from the thoracic region to the pelvic region and function as muscle attachments. Continuous motion and weight lifting create many changes in the tissues. Sometimes the tissue loses its elasticity and sometimes there is calcification of calcium deposits in the ligaments. When this happens, the area surrounding the spinal canal grows in size, thereby reducing the space for the nerve roots.
