More About The Rare, Albino Leopard Gecko

The Albino Leopard Gecko

There has been a tremendous interest in the Albino gecko since the first known hatchling which happen in 1991. Leopard gecko variations include the leucistic, high yellow, and albinos.

when referring to albino leopard geckos, there are three different strains the Tremper, Rainwater (Las Vegas), and Bell. Each of the different strains of albinos are recessive traits. Which simply means that, if you were to breed a Rainwater gecko with a Bell or Tremper albino, they would produce normal looking babies and not necessarily albino babies.

Recessive traits are random accurences of a mutated gene that can control a specific element of an animals growth, it is totally unpredictable. These traits come about at totally unprodictable times, which is what makes them so special. There appearance depends totally on luck.

The three different strains of albin can be difficult to distinguish apart from one another. Sometimes the best one can do is to make an educated guess as to which strain an adult albino gecko, actually is.

The Tremper strain does apprear to be the most common of the three different albino strains. The tremper strain were the first of the albinos to be seen. Quite often these albinos are in fact brown and marked, just as the Mocha Strain are. They can sometimes be pink or bright white in color.

There eye color can range from slightly lighter than a "regular" non-albino geckos eye color, to bright red. The incubation temperature has a big affect on both the color of the geckos eyes as well as the body color also. Usually, a higher incubation temperature will result in a gecko that is darker in color.

The Rain water albinos are the second most common of the three different albino strains. It is thought that they are pinker then the other strains but that is not constantly true. It is the Bell strain of albino leopard geckos that is still relatively rare. Quite often they have a high contrast, wiith "pink" areas that are, most of the time, much darker than the other gecko albino strains.

The eye color of the Bell albino leopard geckos is the reddest of the three strains. Even though the eye color of young geckos often changes as they get older, to the more normal beige eye color in the other albino strains, the bell albino eye color has a tendency to stay red or pinkish even in fully grown geckos.

All three strains of albino gecko are sensitive to bright lights, and they will close their eyes tightly if they are exposed to it. Also, because of their sensitivity to light, most albinos will feel more comfortable eating at night when its dark out.

As leopard geckos continue to gain in popularity due to their easy to care for nature, the possibility of different color variations will grow. It is possible that many more dominant recessives will be realized in the next few years. The breeding of mutations with mutations will quicken the rate of variation making these already unique gecko even more unique.
