Took advantage of Mondays limited MLB schedule and caught two baseball classics. First, on the SNY network, I was able to revisit my youth by watching Game 4 of the 1969 World Series between the Mets and the Orioles. Lindsey Nelson and Curt Gowdy had the call, Earl Weaver became, (I think), the first manager to be ejected from a World Series game, Tom Seaver went 10 IP and the Mets won 2-1 on a throwing error. One thing that struck me, as I realized what a quicker pace the game had back then, was that no one, not one batter, left the batters box between pitches during a time at bat. No tightening of the gloves, fixing the helmet or simply taking a stroll the way todays players do. Ever wonder why a 3-2 game takes three hours? Theres your answer Over on the MLB Network, Bob Costas did an interview with Tim McCarver and Bob Gibson about the 1968 Series that saw the Tigers come from a 3-1 deficit and top the defending champion Cardinals. They covered everything from Gibbys incredible 1.12 regular season ERA to Mickey Lolich winning Game 7 on two days rest. Now, Ill admit to being biased where Costas is concerned, as Id tune in to watch him read the newspaper out loud. But this was more than an interview. It was an opportunity to eavesdrop on an incredible baseball conversation. If it re-airs, dont miss it Ted Lilly has been lights out for the Cubs. Good thing, too as their offense has plummeted to the bottom of the NL charts in many categories Not surprised at the Rockies success since Jim Tracy took over. He did a great job with the Dodgers and never had a chance with the pitiful Pirates. Finally, he has a team talented both on the mound and at the plate Manny who? The Dodgers were 18-12 thru the first 30 games of Manny Ramirezs suspension If rookie pitchers David Hernandez and Brad Bergesen pan out for the Os the way their other callups have, Baltimore may be just a year or two away from contention. A lot of teams wish they were looking forward to Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Matt Wieters and Nolan Reimold as the future middle of their orders Yadier Molina currently stands as this years best case for the All Star vote to be taken away from the fans. As of last week, Molina was the top vote getter as the NLs starting catcher despite the fact that Atlanta s Brian McCann had not retired Looking for an MVP candidate not named Albert Pujols ? How about Prince Fielder ? His 62 RBI have been a major factor in keeping the Brewers at the top of the Central division despite the awful slumps of starters Bill Hall, J.J. Hardy, Mike Cameron and Corey HartIn his complete game victory over the Reds last weekend, Kansas Citys luke Hochevar threw just 80 pitches.

Buy Low- Cubs 1B Derrek Lee is finally starting to wake up at the plate, putting together a hot streak over the course of the last two weeks that finally has him driving the ball As long as were already talking about the Cubs, Geovany Soto has shown small signs of breaking out of his season long slump. Time to decide whether hes a future star or Joe Charboneau. I think hes worth a shot Andre Ethier has 5 June HR while hitting over .400 for the Dodgers during a streak that has seen two walk off hits Look past the high ERA of Matt Capps and focus, instead, on his 16 S.

Sell High- Seems a little ridiculous that a guy with a .365 BA and 17 SB would land on the Sell High list but thats just where David Wright finds himself this week. His 4 HR thru the middle of June seem to be more a result of his new ballpark than any kind of power slump. Fact is, hed probably bring you a mid-tier 3B and a front line pitcher. Worth thinking about The Angels Matt Palmer is currently 6-0. Who? Exactly. Move him to someone desperate for wins.
