The historical city of Agra centrally located in Northern India boasts many imposing monuments that may be experienced by the sightseer. Many of the fine buildings in Agra date back to the Mughal dynasty which is noted for its architectural magnificence.

The majestic Taj Mahal is Agras most famous monument and probably the most stunning building in India. It was constructed by Shah Jahan, a prominent Mughal emperor as a memorial devoted to his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal upon her untimely death at the age of 39. The magnificent mausoleum constructed primarily in white marble is set in an expansive compound with many lovely gardens and waterways. With its exquisite inlaid wall designs, majestic lofty minarets and distinctive imposing dome, the Taj Mahal is considered to represent the highest achievement of Islamic architecture in the nation of India.

Constructed out of blocks of red sandstone, the Agra Fort should be on the itinerary of every visitor to Agra. Designed in the Indo-Saracenic mode of architecture, the characteristic feature of the Mughal era, Agra Fort is a vast compound with many palaces and royal buildings. A highlight is the Hall of Private Audience which is formed of white marble and adorned with exquisite carvings.

In the environs of Agra in Sikandra may be seen the tomb of Akbar the Great, perhaps the most illustrious Mughal ruler. The tomb features a splendid arched entranceway and serene architectural design. Marble inlay work decorates the arch with the inner surface of the tombs dome adorned with designs of geometric designs, Islamic calligraphy and flowers.

The Itimad Ud Daulah is another fascinating monument in the picturesque city of Agra. This imposing mausoleum houses the remains of the father of Mughal Queen Noor Jahan, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. When Mughal Emperor Jahangir married Noor Jahan, Mirza Ghiyas Beg was given the title Itimad Ud Daulah, or Lord Treasurer of the Empire. His mausoleum is a lovely structure said to imitate in marble the form of a silver jewel box.

At Fatehpur Sikri, 40 kilometres from Agra more evidence of Akbars magnificence may be seen in the form of a grand palace and other imposing buildings.
