Money Saving Tips: Cooking With Herbs And Spices

By:

In this convenience driven society we live in today, many have forgotten how to use herbs and spices. Every trip to the grocery store yields two or three or more flavor packets from gravies, to taco spices, we Americans think that this will save us time. In the long run, youd be better off buying cooking herbs and spices and learning how to use them. Not only will your food taste better, it will be free from many of the preservatives and extra ingredients found in flavor packets. In addition to that, you will save money.
When you buy flavor packets or mixes, what are you really buying? There are spices in there, but you will also find things like monosodium glutamate. Many of the additives are to preserve the mixture or enhance the flavor or to bulk up the product cheaply.

Buying herbs and spices will save you money. Every home should have a spice rack, ready to come to the rescue of any great meal. To make soups, Italian food, Mexican food, Chinese food or Indian food, you will need at least the following spices to start.

Onion powder
Garlic powder
Sea salt
Ground pepper
Thyme
Oregano
Basil
Rosemary
Paprika
Chili powder
Cayenne
Ginger
Cinnamon
Mustard powder
Celery
Curry
Garam masala
Turmeric
Dill
Cilantro

Consider learning to cook with spices for your health. Spices are natural, without the added chemicals of flavor packets. Many are finding that some additives cause swelling in their body or joint pain. Whats a flavor enhancer anyway? One must wonder what effect they have on the taste buds or brain to make something actually taste better than it would otherwise.

Buying spices is cheaper than using premixed packets. Packets cost from one to three dollars usually. You can buy a whole jar of spices for three to ten dollars and you will use those spices for a few months to a year. You can even make your own ranch or Italian dressings! So, if you are looking for a healthy, delicious way to cut your grocery bills, consider maintaining your very own spice rack.
