Mold Damage - Warm Weather Is The Perfect Set Up When A Home Has Water Leaks

By:

When you are as sick of winter as you can be, you long for Spring. Those first sunny days and warm breezes are so enjoyable. It is the perfect time to do cleaning and clear out the clutter that has piled up in your house during the winter. It is also a perfect time to check the home for water leaks that could have taken place during the cold, wet weather too. Not only on the inside of the house, but on the outside as well.

When the winter has been especially wet, with either a lot of rainfall, snowfall, or freezing rain, it could have caused some water leaks to the roof, windows, doors, and even the foundation of the home. When snow and rain occurs frequently enough, if there is any small opening for it to make its way into the home, it will.

If there is a shingle or two on the roof, the plywood surface under the shingles and tar paper probably got wet. This problem will only worsen every time there is future wet weather if the problem is not corrected. When snow or rain water piles up around the foundation of the home, it can cause eventual deterioration to the foundation blocks and the mortar that holds them together. Once even the smallest of cracks has begun, it will become a stream, then turn into a river over time. It can flood your crawlspace or your basement.

Windows and doors that have peeling paint or loose or dried out caulking around the frames, also become an invitation for water to make its way into the surrounding woodwork. This is bad enough in the wintertime, but when the weather warms up enough, it can cause mold to develop and continue to grow and spread every time additional water or even humidity in the air gets to it.

Repairing cracks in a foundation, repairing caulking, and patching up a few shingles is not that big of a deal, but mold can be an entirely different matter when it infiltrates the walls, floors, ceilings, attic and basements of a house. This is a lot different than just finding a little mold in your shower stall or bathtub surround that you can wash down with bleach and get rid of.

When mold invades the inner or outer structures of the home, like behind walls, in attic rafters and floors, basements, and even wood areas behind gutters too, it can be so difficult to get rid of that many times a professional water damage company will have to be called in to rid your home of the mold. It can be terribly expensive and a time consuming job. When you spring clean this year, be sure and look for more than clutter. Clutter can be organized or thrown out in the trash, mold is not so easy to dispose of.
