Modern High Definition Television Features Explained

By:

A lot of people will be aware of the newer televisions that are available these days, technology has advanced so that we can now view TVs, movies and games at a higher resolution known as High Definition or HD. The resolution can be up to twice (1080p) what we expect from regular TV broadcasts of DVDs which is typically around 480p. This increase in resolution means a vast increase in detail that we can see in the picture.

A lot of TV services are now available both paid via Virgin Media or Sky and free via FreeSat in high definition as well as Bluray players and modern video games consoles for movies and games. As well as the actual resolution there are a number of other features of modern TVs that people are on the lookout for when purchasing a new television.

One such detail that will no doubt be in the forefront of many sports fans this summer with the world cup being shown on TV is the refresh rate of your TV. The refresh rate is how frequently the image is updated, measured in hertz you are ideally looking for a TV screen that has a higher refresh rate as the image will be crisper and not suffer from motion blur which can ruin some fast moving scenes or sports in particular.

The size of the television will obviously be a big decided factor and influences the amount of money you will have to pay. Larger TVs though can have their disadvantages especially in smaller rooms where you may be sat too close so the image looks blurry even with a 1080p picture. Large TVs can also dominate the room they are kept in, larger screens need sturdier stands and so you may find that if you already have a small room then you may quickly run out of room.

Of course you will want a larger screen for the full home cinema effect but you should test out the size by using an old newspaper to build a replica of how big the TV you are looking at will be, you can often find the dimensions of the particular TV you are looking at online and by testing out how big the TV will be you can get a visual idea of how big it will be.

There are many other additional features that may sway your buying decision such as built in freeview or FreeSat tuners inside the TV which can save you extra money on buying a set top box and there are even some TV sets that include DVD players too. Make sure you get a few models from different manufacturers in mind and check these out in your local electrical store, this way you can get a good idea of the picture and colour quality too.
