Modding Your Computer Case For An Artistic Look

By:

Case modding is a process of modifying a computer case. PC cases don't need to be seen as beige, pale looking boxes which are well hidden under the desk. The first case mods started with people that overclocked their computers, as this would create additional heat and a way to cool the hardware was to cut holes in the case and install fans on the side panels. The creativity grew as users began to add plexiglass in the side panels to capture a view from inside of the case. It became popular to install cold cathodes in different colors as lighting from inside the case.

The imagination and creativity of case modding grew dramatically as users found other ways to give their cases a personalized impression. People began painting their cases, replacing the LED's with very bright LED's, the bright blue ones are often the choice among case modders even today. This also led to customized cases, like modded household objects with computers inside and plexiglass cases. The creativity had no limits and it was easy to find guides on how to create different mods. This growing community on the net all shared their ideas and modifications. There was even held competitions where one could win modded cases. Case mod products became accessible in shops where you could find products like bright LED's, glowing power supplies, Cold cathode, fans with built-in LED's, anodized heat sinks in different colors and much more. Manufactures of different hardware like graphic cards, motherboards and sound cards followed with this growing trend. We started to see the PCB's in different colors which the modders could choose between and match with their case mod theme. Having blue lighting through the plexiglass together with a blue motherboard could give a nice look. We also could mount devices on the cases DVD/CD drive panel which would show the temperature of the different components, such as CPU, graphic card and memory, some even features potentiometers to adjust the speed of the cooling fans.

Still the popularity of case modding is not as great as the early years. Today's cases are to some degree premodded, available in various colors and have a more pleasing appearance compared to the old beige cases. Premodded cases has now become more of a business industry where some users would rather prefer a modded case than creating own mods. These often have mods like plexiglass side panels with inside lighting and bright LED's. Case modding can be hard work but will always be a way to highlight a user's creativity in an artistic fashion.
