Thinking of becoming a DJ? You have a lot of music, you have some cd players, so all you need is some speakers and your set right?

Well sure, but its not very advisable. Lets take a look at the break down of what you should have to put on a top notch DJ show in a series of articles. The first article in the series will talk about music libraries.

The first thing you need to have is a music library, before you just start playing your personal music collection or start burning your favorite Aqua album to MP3 (even though Barbie Girl is a great song for weddings) make sure you remember that not everyone has the same tastes in music as you. The best thing to do when you are starting out is to find a existing DJ library for sale. You can find them from an established DJ (I usually look out of town so they dont consider me competition), or you can find them for sale online. If you buy it online, just make sure you are aware of a few things:
EBay can be great but watch the sellers ratingstay away from anyone with too many unfavorable ratings.
Make sure the songs are all legit, and not downloads off a sharing site, not only is this important for quality and legality sake but also many times downloaded music contains viruses that I wouldnt wish on my worst enemy
Make sure that if you dont plan on doing Karaoke, that you stay away from Karaoke librariesif you dont chances are you are going to end up with a worthless batch of instrumentals and background tracks.
The average library will be sold for about $.05-$.10 a song if the seller is knowledgable about the process. (that means a 10,000 song library will run you $500-$1,000)
Make sure you look for a variety and not someones hair band classics of the 80s, unless you are looking to buy several different libraries which I wouldnt recommend.
