Mormon missionaries spend up to two years away from home while serving their mission. This time away from home causes them to miss out on holidays, anniversaries, birthdays and other notable celebratory times.

Missionaries, like most people, enjoy receiving gifts and presents from family and friends. It let's them know that they are thought about and are loved even though they may be several thousand miles away. Some of the best times of year to send your missionary a gift are at his birthday, Christmas or any other holiday or special occasion. Although, it is not always easy to come up with a practical gift for your missionary because of their unique lifestyle, which doesn't allow them to hold on to many belongings, it is still possible.

Consider the following when choosing what gift to give your missionary for that special occasion:

-Photos and Letters: without access to Facebook, it's nice to keep your missionary in the loop of what's going on back home with his family and friends by sending a photo book with accompanying letters. These are the type of gifts that will be cherished forever.

-Clothing: missionaries have a very active lifestyle and as such wear out their clothes rather quickly. Having an extra white shirt, necktie, dress pants or socks will always come in handy. Make sure to get your missionary's most current clothing sizes so you don't buy the wrong size. Also with the addition of 30 minutes each morning that missionaries are allowed to exercise you may consider getting workout clothes. Some ideas might include athletic socks, athletic shoes, workout shorts, t-shirt or even a sweat outfit for those cold times of the year.

-Treats: every missionary has a favorite snack or treat that they crave. Make up a batch of his favorite cookies or buy his favorite candy. He will especially appreciate this if he is serving in a foreign country that doesn't have his favorite treat available. Remember, missionaries are a packaged deal so send enough treats for him to share with his companion.

-Fitness Equipment: with all the treats you'll be sending, make sure to send along some lightweight, portable fitness equipment such as a jump rope, pull-up bar and exercise tubing so he can maintain a healthy weight by exercising during the allotted 30-minutes each morning.

Almost anything will be much appreciated but above all else just remember to be thoughtful and creative with the gifts you send your missionary.
