Reaching that awkward stage between childhood and adolescence young people seem to be maturing much faster than they did 20 and 30 years ago. Bombarded with numerous peer pressures on their journey to the teenage years the youth of today have their own unique challenges to face. With one foot in their childhood and the other crossing into the uncertainty of puberty tweens, as they have been dubbed by society are not quite ready for world, but no longer can be protected by their parents as they once were. Anxious to learn about life through their own eyes and experiences this group of people are responsible for the phenomenal success of authors of adventure novels that are picked up by the millions from retailers and which in some cases are being turned into blockbuster movie series.

Often attracted by fantasy and mystery that involves the main characters being of the same ages as the reader preteen fiction provides an outlet for the emotional and physical changes that are taking place within young people that they do not always fully understand. Through reading about characters that share common interests, backgrounds, or circumstances tweens can associate closely with the stories that unfold to them. Regardless of the setting or plot finding a connection to the protagonist or seeing similarities to the antagonist to other figures that are realistic representations of their own life, preteens are drawn into the works of writers that seem to uncannily understand what challenges and difficulties face the youth of today.

Finding comfort and solace in the pages of the books that are written specifically for tweens, young people can learn to develop their confidence and competency as the see the reflections of their trials being played out in exaggerated forms in the adventure novels that whisk them away to imaginary places. Sometimes turning what is fearful into something humorous, the curiosity, cunning and wit of plot lines lead to sometimes unbelievable escapades that are exactly what the reader of books for tweens is searching for in their own existence.

For some authors the success of their works have reintroduced young people to the wondrous world of reading and presented them with the opportunity to develop their own lifetime love of exploration into the various worlds of characters that take them away from the problems that they are dealing with in school, with their friends, or family members as they discover their true identity and stand ready to move up in the social rankings and define themselves in the world.
