Methods To Improve Your Spelling

By: Julie Thomas

Unfortunately the English language is one of the hardest to master. This has to do with the enormous number of words coming from other languages and the existence of exceptions to the normal rules established over the years. In English, there are more than 1,100 ways to spell only 44 types of sounds, this accounts for the troubles mastering the spelling of many English words. However, there are certain directions that you can follow to refine your spelling skills.

The first rule is to read as much as you possibly can. This is the most powerful method to master the spelling of English words because your memory of the spelling of each word improves each time you read that particular word. This is because spelling has to do with how a word appears on the writing page. Of course, you need to ensure that what you are looking at is using the correct spelling.

To increase the benefits of reading a lot, you should write down in a notebook those words that you have difficulty remembering. rather than reading a list of the commonly misspelled words, you will have your own list that is distinctly attuned to your needs.

Since spelling is nothing but than memory work, another helpful way to enhance your spelling is to employ mnemonics, which are strategies to assist your memory. Mnemonics use images and patterns as a memory aid.

Writing yourself is another excellent way to remember the spelling of words. Using the words that you have listed in your notebook, you can practice using those words in sentences to make it more likely that you will retain the proper spelling. However, there are dangers in writing, unlike with reading books. You could commit to your memory the wrong spelling of words. To side step this problem, which could be hard to counteract later on, you need to ensure that each word you write is spelt correctly. One way to achieve this is to use a spell checker, an alternative method is to let somebody else read what you have written.

Finally, you need to become competent in the basic rules of spelling, such as placing the letter "i" before "e" except when they are found after the letter "c." Again, this is memory work and improvement can only be achieved through constant practice.
