Mens Fashion South Of The Border

There is traditional Mexico fashion, which is a big straw hat and a serape (a cape-like covering that you throw over your head that covers both the back and the front), some old jeans and scuffed cowboy boots. Or the style of the Mariachi, with the wide-brimmed black-sequined hat, black cowboy shirt with silver buttons, black pants with silver buttons down the side and black cowboy boots.

Add a guitar and the Mariachi can serenade the senoritas under their windows. There is also the tropical gentleman suit worn by the likes of Ricardo Montalban in the television series "Fantasy Island" which is a white three piece suit, with tan loafers, white shirt, and dark tie.

None of these are what we mean by South of the Border fashion for men. What we are talking about is what to wear to Cancun for spring break! Every year during the month of March over 200,000 US college students descend on the beaches of southern Mexico to party like there is no tomorrow. So what to wear? Beachwear of course. Cancun looks like a transplant of Miami Beach or Daytona which are also popular spring break resort areas.

For men, beachwear fashion has stayed consistent for some length of time with surfer shorts being the most popular. Surfer shorts are longer than regular shorts and extend down almost to the knees. You can also swim in them. They are baggy, loose fitting, yet their length make them look slim. These are complimented with a nice tank top t- shirt and some sandals. With a great tan, muscle surfer dudes look perfect in this party wear and party they do. The average college guy drinks 100 beers or more in a week.

It's hot, it's fun, and you can dance on the sand thanks to MTV that regularly schedules beach parties for spring break alternating between Acapulco and Cancun. The raging drug wars between the Mexican drug cartels have done little to stop the flood of US college kid partiers to Mexico's beaches for spring break.
I guess there is safety in numbers and it has become a tradition that is hard to stop.

If you are planning on going, besides taking you beach wear, be sure to take along sunscreen, hangover helper, and condoms. They haven't made all those "Girls Go Wild" videos because the young ladies are sedately studying for their mid-terms on spring break.

If things get a bit out of hand it is expected. One week does not sound like that long of a time, but you need to pace yourself. Having downed half your weekly ration of 100 beers by drinking 50 of them on the first day is not such a good idea. You do want to be able to tell you grandkids about some of your exploits, so for that you will need to be able to remember them. Otherwise, as the character "Bill" played by Keanu Reeves in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" said "Be excellent to each other and party on dude!"
