Mens Fashion Icons: Johnny Depp

By:

From the incorrigible Captain Jack Sparrow to the larger than life Willy Wonka, Johnny Depp has navigated quite a segment of Hollywood. But once he steps out of his costume and onto the red carpet, the premiere night Depp is still a character that everyone wants to watch. He's no regular at the Bryant Park tents during Fashion Week, but Johnny Depp definitely knows what he's doing with his wardrobe.

His Fashion Philosophy
Conformism doesn't seem to be a word in the Johnny Depp vocabulary. None of what he wears come from fashion magazines or runway shows, though fashion editors often have something to say about his style. His wardrobe and fashion choices are about as colorful and unpredictably interesting as his eccentric and somewhat unhinged screen characters.

Which isn't to say that he's always made the best choices. In fact, Depp's had more than the usual share of questionable outfits. Even in the fashion challenged 90's, his mustard colored suit was far from fashionable, even with Winona Ryder on the left arm. And no couture item can excuse a dirty pair of pants.

If there's any rule that Depp seems to live by, it's to step out in whatever he feels comfy wearing, public opinion be damned. Whether it's torn up jeans or that grungy distressed leather jacket he's had since the 90's, he's more than ready to be seen in footloose clothes.

Copping the Look
Details are huge items in the Johnny Depp wardrobe. It's easy to imagine him having a huge hoard of bracelets and necklaces and hats of every kind imaginable. And if you're copping the Johnny Depp look, it's one of the easiest and cheapest elements to imitate.

Pick up straw, string or wood bracelets, but don't be satisfied with just one or two. Get at least a half dozen and then let them get distressed to get that real Johnny Depp look. A necklace or two would probably be a good idea: grab one with a small, simple pendant on a leather or straw strap. Wear all of them together over a simple v-neck tee for maximum effect, just like the real article does in his photo shoots and magazine spreads.

Unlike a great number of the icons in men's fashion out there, Depp doesn't seem to be too concerned with how his clothes fit. If a t-shirt droops slightly or that leather jacket is a wee bit too short to be ideal, it's perfect for building a Johnny Depp look. Of course, if all else fails, you can always just go out dressed as a pirate.
