Mens Fall Fashion 2009: Bottega Veneta

By:

Fashion, like the rest of the world, was hit hard by the financial crisis. Recessionistas ruled supreme; the runways of the mens fashion world were ruled by black ties, severe suits and a hardness that reflected the hard times ahead. Over at Bottega Veneta, Tomas Maier provides a refreshingly different point of view, at least in the looks he sent down his runway.

The Look
Compared to the loud luxe touches of seasons past and the hard lines of the present, Bottega Veneta for fall is unashamedly and comfortingly soft. Knits and fuzzy fabrics take center stage in Maiers newest collection via simple, toned down coats, sweaters and blazers that looked velvety enough to sleep in.

But that doesnt go to say that the collection had a Boho aesthetic as most of the soft fabrics tend to achieve. Sharp tailoring from the fashion house complements the soft designs to create pieces that were comfortable yet stylishly wearable. It is a delicate balance, aided by a bit of smart styling to help make that warm, relaxed feeling.

Even the accessories got into the soft act. Croc portfolios and unstructured duffels in soft leather kept Maiers theme going, while the clean and simple silhouette of the items maintained the man factor. Loafers also ruled most of the collection, further reinforcing the comfort and laid-back style that the looks inspire.

How to Get the Look
Dig up all those merino jackets and cashmere sweaters of yours as you will need them to simulate the Bottega Veneta fall collection. These and other soft, fuzzy fabrics like velvet are the cornerstones to recreating the look. Donning a salt and pepper cashmere sweater is practically getting half the battle done in a single piece. A solid turtleneck is an equally appropriate choice if you would like to try something different.

Layer your look with a jacket or blazer, preferably one that is seen its fair share of dry cleaning sessions. That slight fuzz of an old, distressed jacket adds character to the look, as opposed to a plain new-condition blazer with its smooth surface and sheen. Finish it off with pants in cotton or, if you are feeling more adventurous, linen.

One key element here is the fit and the tailoring. Even if the fabrics seem fuzzy and worn, the close fits and watertight crafting of each piece keeps everything looking modern. If you are trying to achieve the look yourself, dont settle for items that fit you anything but perfectly. Heck, have a few things tailored if you can afford to do so. The important thing is that the pieces fit your body without hugging you too much.

Remember to keep your color palette to browns, grays and dark blues (think navy). In that respect, Maier follows the recessionista crowd to some extent. Otherwise, grab a soft leather bag and saunter outside as if the recession has become last seasons news.
