Memory Foam Mattresses: Why Are They Naturally Warm?

Aside from the smell, the other often heard gripe about memory foam mattresses is the temperature. Many say that they simply get too hot at night while sleeping. However, not all memory foam is created equal, as some mattresses are cooler to sleep on than others. The explanation is that the chemical structure of mattresses vary from one to another.
Memory foam is warm to sleep on primarily because it wraps around your body very closely. Foam is most effective when your body is in direct contact with it. So if you were to place sheets or blankets on top of thefoam, you would be negating some of the benefits it provides. Foam provides good insulation, so being close to it is what creates the warmth while sleeping.
A polyester fiber layer is placed below the ticking and on top of the foam for some memory foam mattresses and innerspring mattresses. This layer serves as a wall to create a little space between you and the foam, and also is able to evenly distribute heat throughout the mattress. The problem is not all mattresses have this layer, which means that the cotton cover is the only barrier from the memory foam.
The cell structure of memory foam is wide open, which is why foam can collapse to absorb a person's weight, yet at the same time give support by expanding. Also, your body heat is able to flow away while sleeping. This ultimately is what determines whether you will be hot in bed. How well does foam allow heat to flow? Since each brand uses their own variation of foam, the only way to find out is to sleep on one.
For those who have owned a spring mattress that has around 3 inches of foam, then you will already have a good idea whether or not a foam mattress is right for you. So if you don't feel too hot while sleeping on one, then you should be fine.
However, what if ultimately you buy a mattress that you love but is too hot? Fortunately, there is an answer to this problem in the form of mattress pads. These have a polyester filling in them that will provide more airflow while sleeping. All you have to do is buy a pad and place it below your fitted sheet and on top of your bed. This will allow for heat to disperse before it begins to accumulate in the foam.
