Memory Foam Mattress: Advantages And Disadvantages

By:

Getting enough sleep at night consistently has shown to impact overall health. While a number of factors determine how well you sleep, the mattress is as important as any other. So having a quality mattress will make a big difference, and one of the best available is the memory foam mattress. However, it does have its advantages and disadvantages.

Density

Before we discuss the good and the bad, let's discuss density first. Density is the key element of any memory foam mattress. The reason is because it determines how much support it will provide. The greater the density, the more support you will get. Less density however means less support, which is why these these mattresses cost less.

Greater density also means it's more firm. This may or may not be what you want. If you want a softer mattress, then less density will give you that.

Advantages

The primary advantage of memory foam is that it conforms to your body shape by allowing you to sink into it. This is what provides that additional support that you wouldn't normally get from traditional mattresses. It therefore reduces pressure points, and helps with your spinal alignment.

Many customers have reported reduced back, neck, and joint pain as a result of sleeping on memory foam. People who went years without quality sleep all of a sudden weren't waking up in the middle of the night anymore in pain.

Another common problem with traditional mattress is that you wake up in the morning feeling stiff, especially if you sleep in the wrong position. This is negated however with memory foam, as it adjusts to your position.

Disadvantages

Because memory foam is not a natural product, it does have a chemical smell to it especially when first opening it. It usually lasts a day or two, but some claim that they can still notice it after a few weeks. Those who are highly sensitive to smell might be bothered by it more so than others. Some have claimed to have respiratory problems as a result of sleeping on it. Most however don't have any issues with it. The quality of mattress you buy plays a big role in this as well.

One other complaint is that these mattresses get too warm when sleeping on them. However, if you get a quality mattress with open cell technology, the air flow will be better and it won't get as hot as others.
