Memories Of A Traditional Austrian Wedding

By:

One of my favourite weddings was in Austria in a tiny village in the mountains. The eldest daughter of the local vicar was marrying her childhood sweetheart, a young doctor. They were a beautiful couple. The bride had long dark flowing hair, in which she wore flowers, and the groom wore a traditional Tyrol dress suit and a small bow-tie.

There were many things to love about the wedding. Firstly the celebration the night before was delightful. It took place in the bride's families garden on a balmy evening in July. I remember there were some wonderful cakes and plenty of champagne, but most striking was the music. The bride belonged to a gospel choir, and most of her choir members were there that night, singing songs from all countries and all backgrounds. Their rendition of Yazoo's "Only You" was particularly touching.

The wedding day was as sunny and glorious as had been hoped for, and the first event was the walk to the church (as it was in a village there was no need for a convoy of cars). Luckily, a few of the grooms friends happened to play in a marching band, so as part of the procession, a tuba player, a trombonist and a drummer played the most delightful traditional Austrian tunes. I remember thinking that I had entered the miniature village of Trumpton (in fact other non-Austrians at the wedding also made similar comments).

The actual ceremony took place in the local church, and the reception was in the very pretty town hall. All of this was aesthetically perfect, but the thing that made the wedding most special, in my opinion, was the personal touch. After the meal, the friends of the couple put on little performances for them. The one I remember in particular was a little comedy farce about all the boys who had tried to win the brides hand, but had failed. I found out later that this performance was even, partly autobiographical, which made it extra-specially memorable.

So, the details of the wedding can matter a lot in the run-up, especially to the bride, but really it is the personal touches that even the bride and groom cannot fully be in control of, that really matter. What matters is the people who are there. So, in a sense, those who plan to marry one day are already, in a sense, setting up their wedding day, because it is the relationship you have with friends that creates the real atmosphere at a wedding.
