Meherangarh Fort - The Mystique

The picturesque Jodhpur city also known as the Sun City for sunny, bright weather it relishes all year long, lies close to the Rajasthan states geographic centre, making it convenient for the travelling of tourists who arrive here in thousands. Jodhpur is also referred to as the Blue City as there is a collection of houses painted in blue around the Meherangarh Fort.

The splendid Meherangarh Fort stands majestically a hundred feet in magnificence on a perpendicular cliff, which is four hundred feet above Jodhpurs skyline. So massive are its proportions that Rudyard Kipling referred to it as the work of giants and at the present it is considered to be the living example of Hindu fortresses with glittery red sand stone, invincible, imposing and a mysterious beauty. Lot has been written about this Citadel for it is indeed one of Rajasthans most impressive possessions.
To reach this fort founded by Rao Jodha in 1459, visitors have to cross seven gates which bear some marks of the various fights that had taken place in the former area. Some other attractions of the Fortress include a few places inside it, with large and sprawling courtyards. Besides temples and galleries, the Pearl Palace also known as The Moti Mahal is of value as it holds the citys royal throne.
Undoubtedly the main highlight of the Mehrangarh fort is its museum which is one of the most prominent ones in Rajasthan. A collection of ancient royal palanquins can be found in one section of the museum. Overall Rathores heritage is simply displayed here with costumes, arms, decorated period rooms and paintings. The period rooms consist of Moti Mahal - The Pearl Palace, Phool Mahal - The Palace of Flowers, Sheesha Mahal - The Hall of Mirrors and Takhat Vilas - Maharaja Takhat Singh's Chamber.
If you intend to indulge in some Jodhpur Sightseeing, visiting this fort would do you good. Make your stay in Jodhpur all the more memorable by selecting a decent Jodhpur Hotel such as The Gateway Hotel Jodhpur which boasts artistically designed rooms and suites, paired with its beautiful landscaped lawns and palace-style courtyard, offering tradition with a contemporary twist.
