Meeting That Special Someone

Meeting That Special Someone

By:

As a teen and young adult, my options as to where to meet someone I might find interesting were limited. The Internet, of course, did not exist. Once the Web came into play, few options became many almost overnight. This became very apparent as Social Networking and Dating websites began to grow in number and popularity. Sites such as Facebook took on a life of it's own, becoming the most frequently visited site online. There are Dating sites which contain thousands of members who all share the desire to meet someone who is looking for someone. There are those who criticize these sites, considering them as little more than a commercial enterprise taking advantage of lonely men and women. However, many see these sites as the force responsible for changing the face of dating, relationships and marriage.

Networking sites are quite different than Dating sites. The Networking sites are simply a community of individuals who are online for the purpose of meeting others and developing friendships. They enjoy sharing their interests in activities with each other, communicating through emails and chat rooms as well as expressing their rather strong opinions through site blogs. This is not to say relationships do not evolve, they do. However this is not the original purpose of the site. These sites will normally monitor content. In other words, even though the member is able to upload photos onto their personal page, efforts are made to regulate sexual content.

Dating sites exist for one purpose, assisting their members in the process of dating. These sites provide profiles for their members which will give general and specific information as to likes and dislikes, physical descriptions, their purpose for being on the site and what they are looking for in the person they hope to meet. Unlike Networking sites, there is generally a monthly fee involved. In some cases the fee is quite reasonable, in others quite high. Yes, there are many which are legitimate, rightfully boasting of great success. However, there are those which serve no purpose other than to make money off their members. Although some do monitor content, many do not. Before you commit yourself to paying a monthly fee, do some research and protect yourself. Use caution when meeting anyone off the site, disasters can happen.

As for content uploaded into Networking and Dating sites, there is something I feel important to remember. I have seen many photos of members which are far less than modest. Yes, I am trying to be as delicate as possible. I understand the Internet is, and should, be, free of censorship. The only exception would relate to content involving children. That said, please remember the photos you upload onto your page will not be at all private. Once there, it will become everyone's property to do with as they wish. I can, for example, simply click over your photo, save to my computer, and it is mine. I can them upload it onto my site and use it in any context I wish. Please take care.
