Medical Jobs: Paramedics And Emt's

Medical jobs are often fast-paced and intense, requiring quick reflexes, a steady hand under pressure, and life-and-death decisions. That's especially true of those who work as paramedics and EMT's. Many people would never even make it to a hospital alive without their fast thinking and lifesaving skills.
EMT's and paramedics often show up to someone's house when they call 911 or call their doctor for emergency medical treatment. They might drive the ambulance or they might ride in the back, where all of the medial equipment is stored. And they have to have a lot of medical knowledge before they can receive their licenses.

People often conflate the terms "paramedics" and 'EMT's," but there is a difference between the two. Being an emergency medical technician is a step on the path to becoming a paramedic. An EMT basically serves as the healthcare provider before a person enters a hospital. That means the EMT will make sure that a person is able to breathe and that all of his or her air passages are open and functional.

An EMT also provides life support, including CPR if necessary. An EMT also has to be a good driver as the EMT not only has to operate the ambulance, but has to know the quickest way to get to someone's house, which means he or she must know all the shortcuts and all best roads for traveling at various times within a certain area.

An EMT must also have the ability to always stay calm and focused under pressure, and he or she must be self-motivated and be able to give instructions to patients clearly and succinctly.

A paramedic can do all of the things an EMT can do, but also knows some more advanced techniques of life support. This means a paramedic can monitor all vital signs, can assess a patient's overall health, and can complete more extensive procedures to open up a patient's air passages.

A paramedic is also responsible for documenting a patient's condition in detail all the way to the hospital, and a paramedic can also act as the supervisor of a small group of EMT's. Given all of this, a paramedic must have a strong medical foundation, must possess good leadership skills, and must be a calm, responsible, independent individual.

Paramedics and EMT's are real heroes in our society, and they save countless lives every year. They often work late at night, under the most stressful conditions imaginable. Sometimes they are called to scenes of violence and bloodshed, and they might not even know if the criminal responsible for this violence has been captured or not. And yet they carry out their jobs anyway.

Some EMT's have gone on to become firefighters and even doctors. And there have even been doctors who have decided to become paramedics, because they wanted to have a job where they really helped their patients in those critical moments at the scene of an emergency.
