One of the worlds most luxurious eco-resorts has been awarded for its sustainable and responsible tourism development by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and Rainforest Alliance.

The Mayakoba Resort complex features a collection of upscale Cancun hotels made up by the Banyan Tree Mayakoba, the Fairmont Mayakaba and the Rosewood Mayakoba, all idyllic premium resorts for high end travellers interested in taking eco-friendly Cancun holidays. . Situated in the beautiful and dreamy Mexican Riviera Maya, the exclusive resort development comprising three distinct but equally different hotels is set upon 593 acres of land with adjacent lagoons, mangrove forests, cenotes, canals, and pristine white sand beaches.

During a recent awards ceremony held at the resort complexs Banyan Tree hotel, Mayakoba was praised for its commitment to offering eco-friendly holidays in Cancun. Andrs Pan de Soraluce, the President of the resorts developer OHL Desarrollos, was presented with the Ulysses Award from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation and Sustainable Standard-Setter Award from the Rainforest Alliance.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Pan de Soraluce said: From the beginning of our development of Mayakoba, we wanted to achieve two things. First, a resort that touched the environment lightly, leaving an unspoiled landscape for the enjoyment of our guests and future generations and secondly, we wanted the resort to be among the finest in the world, an enclave within an enclave of natural yet magnificent hotels. We are delighted and honoured to receive these awards, which commend the exceptional work of our environmentally-conscious team.

As well as providing an oasis for travellers going on holidays to Cancuns Riviera Maya region, the resort focuses on conservation and the 148 acres of mangrove forests that fringe the coastline provide refuge for nesting birds, as well as vital shelter for fish and turtles.

Tourists can choose from three upscale Cancun hotels - Banyan Tree, Fairmont and Rosewood where they can relax in a luxurious environment surrounded by stunning natural and tranquil landscapes.

When choosing to enjoy holidays in Cancuns Mayakoba hotels, guests are transported on boats to the crystal-clear turquoise lagoons and the mile-long unspoiled beach via canals that have been built exclusively for the Mayakoba Resort.

Each resort has its own biologist who is available to educate guests about the local environment. All Mayakoba Cancun hotels have a number of sustainable and eco-friendly features including water and energy saving practices and organised visits to local communities in the Riviera Maya and Cancun.
