Massa - Could He become the New F1 2008 World Champion?

The Formula One Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has become a real rival to obtain the World Championship of this year’s Formula One title; this is the latest analysis coming from ITV-F1 Martin Brundle. For the following Grand Prix in Great Britain at Silverstone Santander this coming weekend; Massa is the leading driver to manage the victory which will be the first of his career at this circuit.

After the French Grand Prix Massa became the leader of the Formula One standings at two points still from the BMW-Sauber driver Robert Kubica. His Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen has an advantage of 10 points from his McLaren rival driver Hamilton.

Despite the fact; Massa has not been considered as a real threat driver among the top contenders due to the fact that his team mate and current Formula One champion Raikkonen has captivated the media along side with Kubica and Lewis Hamilton.

ITV-F1 Brundle has stated that Massa’s case is particular as he is one of the drivers who has achieved more grand prix than the rest of the participants during the season; and has certainly showed a real edge to eventually win the championship.

Bundle wrote in his latest column for the Sunday Times “We saw him deliver his almost customary victories at Bahrain and Turkey,” at the same time Massa has made some major mistakes back towards the initiation of the season, “but it was generally accepted that over the course of the season Raikkonen would be the one to put in the critical fast laps around the pit-stop window, get to the front and control the race…Massa has apparently upped his game yet further this year, though. On his day Massa is immense. He impresses me in the level way in which he is handling success and failure, taking both in his stride. It is not at all inconceivable that he could be this year's world champion.”

Massa is confident that the struggles he was required to face in France and the cold he is still overcoming will not affect his skills to manage a successful race at Silverstone, a competition in which his preceding best position has been fifth place during the 2006 and 2007 competitions.

“It's nice to be leading the championship and to see your name at the top of the sheet, but to be honest, it means little at the moment and I have to concentrate on other things. There is still a very long way to go, and being the leader changes nothing for me. I prefer to concentrate on my job and look at the testing and each race as it comes. Only after all the races will we see if we did everything right. Sure, it's good to be first and to come to the next race leading the series and having won the last race. It gives you a boost, but that only lasts until it's time to start practice again. As for the test itself, I was quite happy with the car and the work we did. The balance of the F2008 was good and I felt comfortable in the car. We had some good results in terms of set-up and got through our whole program.”

Without a doubt the Formula One fans as well as the people that daily work in the industry do expect the best of this competition where Massa has a leading role and could eventually become the new number one but let’s not forget the other drivers who are also in constant pursuit of the title.
