Marriage Advice: When It Comes To Your Husband And His Delicate Old Mother...plant Some Seed

We're going to tackle one of the bigger issues in marriage; the live in in-laws. Life is tough enough without having a partial referee (more commonly called a homer) involved in the daily interactions of your life.

It's not that you don't love her ...well kind of. But, when constantly in your presence - 24-7 you know somebody's going to lose it. And unfortunately, your mother-in-law is a Jedi master when it comes to when, where and how of letting her opinion be known. She has mastered the art of mind control.

She plants these seeds that can grow in any environment. Gardner's have a term for them: Weeds!

So what are you to do? You can't tell you husband that his delicate little old mother, the one that when he was a child walked him to school uphill both ways in the snow when her leg was broken - just to make sure he was safe - has become the bane of your existence.

Nope, that won't work. So back to the question, what can you do?

First of all, the Marriot down the street would be great; but, who foots the bill? Remember, she's your husband's delicate little old mother. You know that's another burden that you don't want to take on.

How does having your own private in-law quarters sound?

This is a great idea! But...it sounds expensive. You are right. It can be down right unaffordable. Call your local contractor and ask for a quote. I bet that the figure of $20,000 isn't out of the ballpark.

Wait just a minute. How about managing the job yourself? And better yet, make your husband manage the project. I mean, it's his mother. What bigger act of love can he show for her than to make a private place for her to stay?

This is your chance to plant seeds, ones that actually create a win-win-win scenario. Think about it, done right and your husband's act of love is not only for your mother-in-law but for you too.

For a married man - BAM - it's the equivalent of hitting a grand-slam in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Now is the time to start the Jedi master work of your own.
