Markha Valley trek is a very popular trek in Ladakh. It can be covered in 11 days. The highest altitude to reach in the entire trip is located at 3850 meters.
You start the journey from Delhi. Take a morning plane to Leh and spend the entire day acclimatising. It is absolutely advisable that you spend good enough time acclimatising. The next day you visit the touristic places like the ancient monasteries in the nearby surroundings.

Shey gompa used to be a summer palace for the Kings. It is 15 kms away from Leh and was built ages back in the 17th century. The Shakyamuni Buddha statue inside the gompa is worth a million captures. The divinity that the place exudes is surreal.

Not just Shey but also several other gompas such as the Thiksey Gompa is known for its beauty and raw natural surroundings. Thikse belongs to the Gelukspa order and is known for its beautiful location. Hemis too, which is 45 kms from Leh is the biggest monastery. It is run by the Drukpa order.
On the third day you take the jeep to Spituk which takes approximately an hour. The Spituk Gompa built here is half a century old. This is also going to be a starting place to trek to the confluence of Indus and Zinchen. You can either stay up with the locals there or pitch up your own tents nearby and spend the night in wilderness.

On the fourth day you start from Zinchen to Yurutse. In between you stop by at Rumbak and enjoy the breath taking views of the Stok mountains. Yurutse is the last destination for the day, a small village which is the halting point for the night.
From Yurutse drive to Ganda la which is at 4900 m. You get glimpses of the Zanskar at the far south while you slowly proceed to Shingo village. From the village you reach Skiu which is a meeting place of rivers flowing from the Markha valley and Shingo.

Day 6 should have you marching towards Markha, your ultimate destination. Markha is a small village that houses a fort. Before finally arriving here you will go through several little streams. The Markha valley has a village Hankar located at the highest point in the Markha Valley.

After crossing Markha you have to trek a bit. The path is good and you come across chortens which are nothing but walls with Buddhist prayers carved on them. The entire path from Thochuntse to Nimaling is dictated by views of the Kangyaze peak.
