Marketing: How to Drive Traffic to Your Blog

By: Erica Johansson

Driving traffic to your site is not always an easy process. Follow these steps to get more visitors and boost your ranking.

Research your market: Google your potential topic and see what\'s already out there. Find a niche market and only write about topics relating to this niche.

Passion: Create a website from a topic you\'re interested in. If you\'re not passionate about what you write about, your motivation will not last long. Passion is one of the most important things for a long-term business.

Update frequently: Why would anyone want to read your blog if you only post once a month? Write a short post once a day or at least a few times a week rather than long posts infrequently. By updating regularly you give your readers a reason to return.

Link: One of the best ways to get visitors and improve your ranking is through links. But blog for a month or two until you approach other bloggers. If your site isn\'t content-rich you will look unprofessional. Who wants to link with a blog with only three or four posts?

Act friendly and courteous, and only ask for link exchanges with sites relating to your topic. There\'s no point in getting a link from a blog about cats if you blog about your network marketing business. Remember, links are good, links from high-ranking sites are great.

Submit to search engines: Major search engines like Google and Yahoo have a \"submit your site\" link. Also search for link directories and submit your site to community based sites. Even if these communities are smaller it can boost your ranking and traffic in the long run. Community-based sites as Blog Catalog, My Blog Log, and My Site Profile give you your own home page where you can display your blogs and other information.

Use traffic generating sites: On sites as BlogExplosion and BlogMad you get credits (which turns into traffic) while you surf other blogs. Aside from more hits you can also get inspiration and ideas for your blog when you visit other sites.

Write unique content: Later, when your blog is established, you can add free articles from experts and other bloggers, but in the beginning you need fresh and original content. If you only use articles from other sites, your visitors might visit these sites instead.

Personalize your blog: How can you mix and use colors, font and tone and pictures (of you) to make your blog personal? Create an individual looking blog that sets you apart from the crowd. Also consider adding a picture to let your readers know who you are.

Network: If somebody sends you an e-mail or comments on one of your posts, send a response. Don\'t underestimate networking with other bloggers.

Apply these tips and you will soon see an improvement in your traffic and ranking.
