Marine Gps Systems - Even A Child Can Use Them

I was looking at the news online, we got rid of television a long time ago, and I saw the story about that young teenage girl who is sailing around the world by herself in that little boat. At first, I thought her parents must be crazy. I mean, if I were a pirate and wanted someone to hold for ransom, I'd send my speedboats to capture that girl. I'm sure proper precautions are being taken, and I wish her the best, but I still think it is a strange idea. Oh well, to each his own.

In thinking about it, I realized that she must have a really marine GPS system on board her ship. Not to say that someone her age couldn't learn old fashioned stellar cartography, but it's not really likely that she has all of the star charts for the whole planet committed to memory. What is more likely is that she has a course mapped out and programmed into the marine GPS system, and is either letting the boat run on autopilot or is steering according to the guidance of the GPS system.

If you think of it that way, especially if they ship has its own self guidance system, it doesn't sound that hard at all. Still, I'm sure there is difficulty enough that the marine GPS system is just taking the edge off of everything.

It wasn't too long ago that a serious navigator had to rely on a sextant and the stars to cross the sea. The closest to that I have come is from tour guiding, where from the position of the stars I can tell what direction I am facing. I supposed if I wasn't in an enclosed vehicle, driving on a set highway, I could eventually get to know where I was and how to make course corrections based on the positions of the heavens, but for now, I just stick to the road in front of me.

Should the day come that I take to the seas, I may learn how to read those stars, but I'm not stupid. I'll have a marine GPS system with me to make sure I'm headed the right way. There aren't a lot of places to stop and ask directions in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but if that sixteen year old girl sails by, I'm sure she'll be able to help out.
