Manufacturing is the process involved in producing the goods and services required to meet the demands of society. In modern history, the manufacturing world has undergone quite the overhaul. The most prominent changes are:

(1) Worldwide competitiveness in the global marketplace. Years ago, governments would insulate their manufacturers from outside competition by prohibiting foreign companies to operate within their borders. However, this is a thing of the past in the new global economy. It is no longer necessary to market to your customers only in your own country. As information technology has grown quicker and more readily available, it has become far simpler to locate, receive quotes, and import goods from manufacturers any where on the globe. Even the smallest manufacturers are faced with the daunting task of competing with countries like China and India, where the cost of labor is far below what it is here. This is putting pressure on local businesses to concede to current demands and step up their competitiveness.

(2) Technically advanced manufacturing or advanced technology. In the past, many countries have had an advantage with the low cost of labor, but now the US and Europe are reaping similar benefits by reducing manufacturing costs by automating many tasks. It is common to see these advanced methods, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), in many of these companies. Utilizing Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) equipment can help speed up the process of manufacturing large quantities of products while maintaining inexpensive and minimal labor requirements. One laborer can be highly productive simply by operating more than two pieces of equipment simultaneously.

But because CNC machines are so widely available, they might not be enough to keep you ahead of your competitors. In order to corner the market for certain items or to stay ahead of the competition, some organizations develop their own technologies and try to keep them from being reproduced for as long as possible. The field of robotics is fast becoming a great option to help perform tasks that would otherwise be difficult for a human to handle.

(3) A more diverse selection of materials. There is a steady growth in the availability of more diverse materials. Companies should have manufacturing processes that easily adapt to the use of new materials. And now, with a dwindling number of direct laborers, material cost has become a large factor in overall product cost.

(4) The overall design of the manufacturing processes, with plans and leadership of the company. Nowadays, everybody wants more for less -- and they want it as soon as possible. You may have pending orders and the equipment to fulfill them, but without the right management tools, they are useless to you. Your manufacturing processes must be able to maximize the productivity of both your workforce and your equipment.

Your organization should be equipped to fulfill the needs of a wide variety of customers. The production manager should be able to organize your manpower and equipment availability, so that your workforce and your machinery are being used to their full potential. The present infrastructure aids in the manufacturing process, but the kudos really belong to the manager who has an understanding of these manufacturing processes, as they are the experts at getting this done and doing it more efficiently than they did yesterday.

In our dynamic world, the speed at which your manufacturing facility implements new technology and management techniques will determine how quickly your company will reap the rewards. But many times new technology is very costly in the beginning and becomes cheaper after some time, so work out the costs. In addition to implementing the latest technology, you must be sure to train the workforce in how to use these tools to their full potential.
