Plantain – Nature's Secret
Plantain, a type of banana, has been in the news in recent days. Researchers in Liverpool have discovered that plantain can halt the development of Crohn's Disease. The UK research group examined a key stage in the development of Crohn's Disease. In the beginning stages, the bowel is invaded by E-coli type bacteria.
The research showed that broccoli and plantain can stop this invasion at a rate of between forty two to eighty two per cent. They also checked how apples and leeks would work to halt the transfer of bacteria to the bowel. These two foods made no noticeable difference to the bacteria.
Actually, the UK confirmed the results later by using tissue samples from patients undergoing surgery related to IBD. Plantain can be considered a blocker to the development of Crohn's Disease. This research was welcomed around the world. In the UK alone, one in 800 people suffer from Crohn's Disease.
The research around plantain is continuing as scientists check into its ability to help people in remission with Crohn's Disease. The study showed the importance of keeping processed foods out of your diet. Plantain had the opposite effect as polysorbate-80 – a fat emulsifier used in processed foods. Polysorbate-80 encouraged the transfer of bacteria to the bowel while plantain fibers halted the transmission.
Of course, these results allow the 'banana' family to live up to its reputation of being a super food. Indeed, plantain has always been known to promote digestion. As well, plantain helps the body to retain more calcium, nitrogen, and phosphorous. These elements help to rejuvenate healthy tissues.
Plantain does contain sugar but it can be metabolized and digested easily by the body. Plantain has no cholesterol and just a hint of sodium. Plantains (and yellow bananas) are believed to help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). They are natural mood enhancers and work perfectly for the body in the winter season with its limited light. Yet plantain should be a year-round choice. After all, the people of India refer to plantain as “nature’s secret of perpetual youth."
