One man died and three people were injured this morning, July 14, 2011, when a big rig and a UCSF shuttle bus collided. UCSF employees were aboard the shuttle that was headed to San Francisco General Hospital when a Peterbilt tractor-trailer transporting four cars collided with it. According to the SFGate news story, one passenger who was aboard the shuttle was thrown outside and pinned under the truck. The victim died at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 6:20 a.m. at Octavia and Oak Streets in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco.
Three other people aboard the shuttle were injured, but their injuries were not life threatening.
The SFGate story reports the shuttle did not have seatbelts, and states this is the second fatal accident in which a UCSF shuttle has been involved in the past year.
A dispatcher for the truck was quoted as saying the driver had a pretty clean record, and the news story states that Ross Mirkarimi, a supervisor who represents the area in which the accident occurred, is aware of Octavia Boulevards challenges that can be dangerous for drivers. Investigators are still examining the cause of the crash.
We offer our condolences to lose involved in this accident, and understand how devastating a single terrible moment can be. The effects can last a lifetime.
