Mai tai are alcoholic drinks based on rum, Curaao liqueur, and lime juice, and is popular in "Polynesian-style" settings. The term Mai tai came from the Tahitian word that literally translates as good or out of this world quite fitting for this cocktail drink, because of its unique taste, together with all of its mixes. This drink came to light in 1944 at Trader Vics, a restaurant in Oakland, California. It is said that Victor Bergron, one of the founders of the tiki bar, created this drink one afternoon for some friend who are visiting the Tahiti. One of his friends, after tasting Mai tai, cried out: "Maita'i roa ae!" (literally, very good, figuratively, out of this world! The best!) Hence the name.

Today, Mai tai has evolved from just the simple Bergron recipe, to complicated mixes of fruits and drinks.

So, now that we know the origin of this drink, lets start to mix drinks! Here is what you need for your Mai tai:
Ingredients:
1 jig dark rum
1 jig light rum
1/2 jig triple sec (a kind of Curaao liqueur)
1 jig orange juice
2 jigs Jamaica lime juice
1 tablespoon brown sugar

Preparation:

First, pour all the ingredients except for the dark rum in a shaker with ice cubes. Shake well. Next, strain into an old-fashioned glass over crushed ice. Then, top it with the dark rum. Finally, you can garnish it with fruits, and add straw. And thats it! Your very own Mai tai.

The Mai tai became a very popular drink in the 50s and 60s. It was so popular, that almost every restaurant, particularly tiki-themed bars served them. Today, Mai tai has become synonymous with the Tiki culture both in the past and the future.

With this recipe, you can actually experiment on different flavours and fruits that would make your drinking time a lot fun. So, why not try your very own Mai tai recipe now? Just dont forget to use your imagination!
