There is something special about children and their toys. Growing up, I cant remember a girl who didnt posses a Barbie or a boy who didnt run all over the backyard bringing to battle action figures to defeat evil powers. LEGO sets were strewn all over the floors of every playroom I came into as a kid, including my own. We could invent astonishing things with those model sets; tall buildings for our Barbie doll or stuffed toys to live in, a store in which they could buy their food; the possibilities were only limited by our imaginations. While toys similar to these dont perfectly fit into the category of educational toys, they have the ability to show children some valuable lessons.

Toys of all shapes and sizes and genres are important to children, even those that parents may not at first believe to be educational toys. This is as true today as it was 30 years ago when I sat playing board games with my sister. Children learn through play, and they expand their imaginations and their critical thinking skills. While it may seem that only educational toys have the ability to teach a child anything, that would be a misconception. In essence, most toys are educational toys when you realize that a child learns from free play.

Card games, while providing a lot of entertainment, also work on expanding a childs analytical skills as well as coping skills. Every player does not win when playing board games, and sometimes losing at something is as important for a child to learn as emerging victorious is. When there is a winner and a loser in a board game, one player is humbled while the other, hopefully, learns to be a polite winner. With the assistance of a thoughtful parent, children will develop these skills. So popular are particular board games that they are being modified in ways that they can be played in the car. Travel games may not be as exciting as the original board games, but it sure keeps a child occupied during the trip!

Over several decades, fathers and sons have spent hours of quality time over toy building sets. The wonderfully colorful blocks in a Lego set bring forward the very best in a childs imagination, and keep them occupied for days. The great thing about toy building sets is that just one set could create lots of different items, from a person to a city. Over the years, Lego sets have grown to where there are now sets specifically for girls, such as the Belville line. Obviously, boys love Lego sets like Star Wars or Bionicles. But all children practice dexterity and imagination through Lego sets, and thats what matters.

Need more proof of the value of Lego sets as an educational toy? Studies have shown that children develop new neural connections when playing with toy building sets. By simply playing with their Lego set, kids also learn spatial concepts, cause-and-effect, and fine motor skills. What a way to learn!
