Magnesium Wheels

Magnesium Wheels

What are Mag Wheels? Are they expensive? Can they make my car look nicer? Are they better than my regular OEM Alloy Rims? Dont you fret young man / lady, were going to answer all of your questions; okay?

But first, let us cover some history:
They were first seen on some muscle cars around the 1960s. Since people wanted to be different and stand out from the crowd, they decided to go with Aftermarket pieces. These people leaned towards Magnesium Wheels since they were so shiny and oh so pretty looking; so its been like that ever since. And that covers all the history.

What are Mag Wheels?
Well first of all, Mag stands for Magnesium; someone just got lazy and started calling them that, which is wrong. Theyre actually made out of a Magnesium Alloy material. Theyre made by a real specific forging process that comes from different Aluminum's such as ZK60, AZ31, AZ91, et cetera, et cetera. Of course youve probably never heard of this, because it comes from like Russia or something, but its okay; I didnt know either.

Are they expensive?
YES! Theyre usually featured as Porsche Carrera GT Wheels, racing wheels, and pretty much everything thats expensive. But in my opinion, theyre totally worth it youre the type of person who likes to show off what youve worked so hard for.

Can they make my car look nicer?
There is no doubt that Factory Original Aluminum Wheels alone can make your car reach celebrity status, but if you purchase Magnesium Wheels, youd pretty much be on fire. Although this may be fine and dandy when you first come up with the idea of purchasing them, you should know that they are not really meant for your average car. They are, for the most part, used on racing cars because they tend to be lighter which means that they are easy on the brakes, the suspension, and essentially everything related to that part of the car.

Are they better than regular my OEM Alloy Rims?
Technically.. yes. They offer better handling on the vehicle, it accelerates faster since the wheels are so light, the brakes respond faster, and everything that you can possibly imagine. But as we learned before, they are specifically meant for racing vehicles; not your typical Honda Accord.

Of course these wheels have some disadvantages:
They are actually very flammable. Magnesium contains an extremely burnable metal. Since they can cause such dangerous situations, they have actually been outlawed in the UK Motorsport scene. They usually catch fire in racing competitions when something punctures the tire and its been scraping the road for longer than it should be. It shouldnt even be scraping the road in the first place if they know that these wheels are so dangerous, you know? Although this may be the common case, there are some wheels that have a low corrosion resistance; but its very rare to find these.

Since these wheels are so popular, it causes for many people to make imitations of these wheels and sell them for more than theyre actually worth. Some people in fact just chrome Factory Original Steel Rims-since they look exceptionally similar to magnesium wheels-and sell them for the same price as OEM Magnesium Rims, which obviously sucks.

So are you still thinking about purchasing these overpriced wheels that are mainly meant for racing cars? I didnt think so; but you learn something new everyday, right? Feel free to visit us at OriginalWheels.com for all of your wheel needs (:
