Magazine Tips For The Walther P22

By:

The Walther P22 .22 caliber pistol has a reputation for being especially picky about ammunition and also for having somewhat finicky magazines as well. In fact, most of these issues were corrected in later version of this pistol, but the stereotypes surrounding the firearm have lived on longer than the problems.

The P22 magazine has developed over time as the pistol's operation and components have been perfected. Older versions of the P22 magazines were stamped with a part number that began with the letter "B." These older magazines were prone to feeding problems and would often jam or fail to feed a round.

Latter magazine versions were developed that are stamped with a product number that begins with an "A." The most noticeable difference between the newer "A" magazines and the older "B" magazines is the small slot in the newer magazines that allows the .22 caliber rounds to sit staggered upon each other.

Many people think that something is wrong when they see the P22's magazine with rounds staggered upon each other. If fact, this is perfectly normal. If you look closely, you'll notice that the rounds actually sit perfectly in-line with each other as they progress toward to the top of the magazine in preparation for being fed into the pistol's chamber.

There are many retail stores both online and off that still sell the older magazines that are stamped with a "B" part number. There are also aftermarket part manufacturers that make and sell magazines using the older, flawed design that is prone to feed problems. These magazines may not carry the noticeable "B" part number, but instead a totally different number assigned by the aftermarket manufacturer.

If you're in the market for new or additional magazines for your P22, be sure that you only purchase factory-made products that are marked with a part number that begins with an "A."
