Magazine Freelance Writing

When it comes to freelance writing, there are many markets you can break into. You can write articles, press releases, blog entries, you can write ad copy and you can even write how-tos. These projects, depending on the client, typically dont pay more than $10-20 each. If you can crank them out fairly quickly, however, while concentrating on producing quality work, you can make a great living as long as you work at least 7-8 hours per day. However, theres a much higher paying market that I havent mentioned, which Im pretty sure you can infer from the title. You guessed it, its magazine writing.

Magazine writing has many advantages. You not only get your own byline, which you often dont get with articles and press releases, but you also get paid a whole lot more. You can often get paid hundreds of dollars for one magazine article, depending on which magazine youre writing for. Now, when you consider that an internet article pays only $10-20 and a magazine article pays ten times that or more, the choice should be clear, right? Well, hang on a second. Theres more than meets the eye with this type of market.

Internet article writing usually doesnt require very much research. If it does, it usually pays a little better. Not much, but youre typically able to command a higher rate for anything you do adequate research for.

With magazine article writing, there is extensive research to be done. Magazine articles cannot have fluff. Its solid information. Theyre well researched, well written, and for that they pay a whole hell of a lot more. But theres something else you should know about magazine writing.

While magazine writing pays ten times or more than internet article writing, you will sometimes have to wait weeks for your payment. And sometimes you may even have to wait months.

If you can wait that long for payment, then magazine writing is a great market to break into. Just the fact that you get your own byline is reason enough to try. However, most writers will find that magazine writing is much better as filler income and that its better to make most of their income by completing projects that, while they dont pay as much, offer the opportunity to have income coming in all the time.

But if you think that you have what it takes to do magazine writing, and you can handle the slow pay, then all you have to do is send a query letter to your favorite magazines editor with a story idea. They may like it and they may not, but sooner or later youll have a winning idea and youll get to take advantage of that higher pay and the prestigious byline that goes along with it.
