Made Redundant And Thinking Of Starting A Business? Like This Number Cruncher, You Need A Passion

One option following redundancy is to start your own business but what to choose? I reckon a good starting point is to follow our passion, for if we are to use our redundancy payout towards starting a business we have more chance of making it a success and enjoying it if we choose something for which we have a passion..

My thoughts on this topic were triggered at a meeting earlier in the week with some accountants yes really!

I was in the City for a financial review. Normally I love going up to town with all the hustle and bustle and the office we were using was on the 17th floor, so a fantastic view . But I needed that view, given the topic, which was likely to be a bit dry. There were eight of us round the table including five accountants and I braced myself for a couple of hours of number crunching.

A trolley was wheeled in half way through providing refreshments we are always well looked after with proper coffee and hard to resist buttery biscuits. One of the accountants began asking our coffee provider lots of questions about how the coffee was made, what sort of machine, what temperatures and as it turned out he was a bit of a coffee expert. Before we knew it we were being regaled with tales of how to make coffee, what machines were the best, when to walk out of a coffee shop (because you can tell from the way they are using the machine you are going to get a sub-standard cup of coffee).

Whilst all of this was really interesting and it was there was something more fascinating going on. And that was the demeanor and body language of the accountant.

As he got more in to his subject, his whole face lit up and he became more and more animated. On top of all that, a great big smile from ear to ear as he told us what he knew about making coffee.

And it did make me think he would be much happier if he were to follow his passion rather than spend his time counting. Im sure if Id asked him he would have said there was more money to be made in accountancy than making coffee and Im sure thats true but as we went back to our numbers, the smile left him and the knitted brow returned along with a slight droop of the shoulders.

For some of us, our passion may not be immediately obvious and we may have to put some time and effort in to discovering what it is, but I reckon that will be time well spent if we can continue through life with an ear to ear smile rather than droopy shoulders, dont you?
