Made Redundant And Finding It Hard To Let Go

By:

Redundancy can be a challenging time for many reasons but one aspect that is often forgotten is that of letting go of the past. When you are made redundant, your activity is naturally focused on sorting your future out, but it can be beneficial to spend time making sure you have let go of the past so that you can properly move forward. Here are my top five tips on letting go of the past following redundancy.

1. Being made redundant is like suffering bereavement so it follows that the moving on cycle is similar. There are natural stages everyone goes through denial, anger, despair, reorganization and moving on. Expect to go through each one and acknowledge your feelings are all part of the process.

2. Allow yourself time to celebrate the past - what you enjoyed about your role, what things you learned during your time there.

3. Meet up with some of your former colleagues. Some find this difficult as they find it easier to make a clean break, however it can be therapeutic to have conversations without the burden of office politics or deadline pressures which can help you reassess your time there.

4. Make a list of all the things you won't miss about your old role - it could be anything from a long commute to a particular monthly meeting which you never enjoyed or an IT system you found particularly frustrating.

5. Surround yourself with support - most understand that redundancy can be a challenge and are willing to lend support if someone close to them is going through such a time. Make sure you ask for support and remember you can use different people for different things, you do not have to get all your support from the person closest to you.

In summary then, to help yourself move forward following redundancy, acknowledge the past, look for the positives, get support and remember, particularly when you find yourself languishing in 'the well of despair', that you are going through a natural process.
