One discouraging fact about lucid dreams (LD) is people wake up sooner then they want from the (LD). There are things that can be done to keep you in the (LD). The easiest is to look at your feet or hands while having (LD). The reason behind this is your body in the dream is considered one of the things that will change very little. Another object you can look at while having (LD) is the floor under your feet. This is also considered something that changes very little. There is a problem with this technique. Sight usually is the first sense to go when you are having (LD). In fact this is a good indicator that the (LD) are coming to an end. It is reported that the sense of touch will last the longest in lucid dreams.

In 1978 Stephen LaBerge of the Lucidity Institute developed a technique he called dream spinning. This is where a person who is having lucid dreams and the dream begins to end. They literally spin in the dream. Interesting enough, when the spinning technique was used in lucid dreams LaBerge had the feeling of waking up, but waking up in the dream. As LeBerge and others continued to practice this spinning technique they discovered they would wake up in a different dream scene. This brought about the idea that as one is having (LD) they can use the spinning technique to change their location in the dream.

LeBerge goes on to explain the technique of spinning in lucid dreams. The first thing a person needs to do when they feel the lucid dream starting to fade and they can still feel their dream body, the dreamer should start to spin as if they where a top. This should be done as fast as possible from a standing position, the arms should be stretched out beside them. While the lucid dreams are progressing, it was found to be important to feel the spinning as much as possible. This was to continue until the dreamer was in a new lucid dreams scene. As they where spinning they where also instructed to repeat to themselves that the next scene will be a dream. If you decide to try this technique it would be helpful if you practiced this while in the awake state, imagining you where having lucid dreams.

Another technique to extend the time in lucid dreams is hand rubbing. This works very much the same as spinning, but when the lucid dreamer feels the dream is about to end they begin to rub their hands together vigorously. They want to feel the sensation of the rubbing, friction and heat generated from this. Just as in spinning, they should also repeat to themselves that the next scene will be a dream scene.
