Ltl Shipping

By:

LTL is a kind of shipping that is most appropriate for people that are shipping things that weigh more than 100 pounds. Anything under that weight is more appropriate for a regular parcel carrier. Also, anyone shipping anything over 10,000 Lbs is likely better sent with an FTL option. Any Boston courier service that deals in large trucks likely deals with both of these shipping options.

LTL stands for less than Truck Load, and FTL stands for Full Truck Load. These are the two basic ways which large shipments are divided among courier companies. When you ship full truck load, it means that you have hired the entire vehicle, and yours are the only goods on the vehicle. The downside to this is that you are paying for all the available space in the vehicle, even if you're not utilizing it.

That is why LTL shipping can be very economical for people that are shipping loads that wouldn't completely fill a truck. When you ship LTL, you are only paying for the capacity percentage of the vehicle that you are actually occupying. LTL is among the most affordable ways to ship, often cheaper than either FTL or shipping something yourself.

There are downsides to ever option though, and that is true of LTL as well. The primary trade off, as it often is in the courier industry, is that what you save in money you will lose in time. Shipping LTL is always going to be slower than FTL options. The more people that you are sharing the LTL load with, the larger the risk is that your delivery is going to be slower than usual.

That is because there can't be too much of a hierarchy among those that are sharing the loads in an LTL truck, because they are all paying based on the same scale. If one company is hiring a larger portion of a load, an effort will be made to unload their cargo first if the destinations are in the same city. Often however, LTL truck loads will make deliveries across the nation. If you're shipping to the far side, your shipment will be delayed with every delivery that is made along the way.

If speed is more important to you, you should opt for the FTL option. It will also give you flexibility if you need deliveries made in a certain order, something that you certainly would not have when you're shipping LTL.
